Calendula- If one looks at a calendula flower they will see why it corresponds to the Sun. Its’ orange and yellow petals radiate light, warmth and strength like the sun’s rays. Calendula is warming, drying and slightly bitter, and it corresponds to the fire and water elements- it is warming like fire but acts upon the waters of the body. Calendula is indicated in damp heavy, cloudy weather, it is specific for wounds that will not heal and for lymphatic congestion. On the level of the soul the Sun represents the essential Self, the core of who we are, the center of our being; calendula is specific for brightening the inner Sun. She is also an amazing skin soothing herb.
Ashwaganda- Ashwaganda is known as a Rasayana in Ayurveda. “Rasayana is what enters (ayana), in the essence (rasa). It is what penetrates and revitalizes the essence of our psycho-physiological being… Rasayana substances rebuild the body-mind, prevent decay, and postpone aging…. They do not simply add to the bulk or quantity of the body, but increase its quality” (Yoga of Herbs p 72). Ashwaganda has an affinity for the reproductive, nervous, endocrine and immune systems. According to medical astrology principles, Ashwaganda is ruled by the Sun. The Sun represents the core vital force of the body, it is the source of light, the light of nature and it represents the fundamental core of the self. Ashwaganda relates in the way that it strengthens, nourishes and rebuilds the core of the core vitality of the body and creates a radiant warmth. Ashwaganda corresponds to the Earth and Fire elements.
St John’s Wort- St. Johns Wort is a hearty plant with tiny little yellow flowers that look like the sun with rays shining out. It has a nervine trophorestorative action- meaning that it helps to restore the tone and function of the nerves. St. John’s Wort is widely used for melancholy and depression, it brings the energy of the sun and light into the body/mind/spirit when ingested or used topically. It is also used in many oils and salves for nerve pain, burns (solar/fire element), and general trauma to the skin.
Rosemary- Rosemary has a pungent, aromatic and oily taste, energetically it is warming and stimulating, and in medical astrology rosemary is ruled by the Sun which corresponds to the heart and circulatory system. Rosemary is known to increase circulation through out the entire body and specifically to the brain. In these ways it corresponds to the fire element as well as the air element.
