The Opposition in Astrology. Zoom on Leo/Aquarius.

The opposition in astrology.

Lets be straightforward- this blog post is about the opposition in astrology. My experiences are told from my point of view during a major transiting opposition in Aquarius season 2026- but this can be applied to oppositions at any time in transit or in the natal chart. ♡

First. What is an opposition?

An opposition is when planets are 180° away from each other. They are on polar opposite sides of the zodiac, the sky, of the chart. There are 12 signs of the zodiac but it has been explained to me that there are really 6, each with a polar opposite. This is where we can understand the opposition, polar opposite energies are at play. Lets see how to work with this instead of becoming victim to it. 👇

Traditionally the opposition is seen as “bad”. In modern days we can view it as a compromise leading to a richer life. Using astrology as a constructive way of understanding and dealing with our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies we can see the opposition as way to:

~ recognize tension and grow through it

~ “meet in the middle”

~ find balance

~ experience the “best of both worlds”

~ integrate

I love the way that Steven Forrest puts it in his book “The Inner Sky”: “The tension between the .. [insert sign of choice here] planet and the ..[opposite sign here] can be invaluable. Neither one likes it. But both are better off.” He also shares that when we fall victim to the opposition instead of working with it and finding balance we really get nothing done. We flip flop back and forth from perspective to perspective, there is tons of tension and for a time we are one way then for a time we are another. For the natal opposition we can flip flop our whole lives really finding division in our being, maybe even hating the polar opposite for a while.

Lets explore this opposition that I am going through currently- anyone who has planets in Leo will surely find this applicable.

I have a Leo stellium in my natal chart. Moon at 0°, Venus at 8°, Jupiter at 11°, Mars at 11°.

Saturn is at 6° Aquarius (Leo’s opposite)- this is really an opposition to all of the Leo planets, Venus being the strongest.

To be honest- I normally don’t love the Aquarius season time of year, its chilly, I have to be inside a lot, which means a little cabin fever and too much screen time, the garden is normally getting eaten by slugs and I truly feel a lack of vibrancy. So this year I decided to explore why and how I can work with it, and feel better during this winter season.

Currently in Aquarius season 2026 Pluto is at 3° Aquarius and will be in Aquarius for almost 20 years. Thus, personally I am preparing and honestly available for a good bit of cathartic change (which Pluto brings) in my life, death and rebirth, phoenix moments. Further, what I’m practicing is exploring how Leo- the one who expresses creatively and unapologetically from the heart and needs to be seen by others in that- meets the individuation process of Aquarius- who has a genius mind and a deep inner knowing but has to ultimately accept detachment from others thoughts/feelings/judgements because of its unique exploration of the self.

This polarity involves:

The axis of the ego.

The axis of worth and value of the self and group.

The polarity of emotional involvement and intellectual detachment.

The axis of circulation in the body (Leo rules cardiovascular system, Aquarius rules electrical system/ kundalini)

Creativity and unapologetically fringe.

Radiance and rebellion.

Creativity and structure.

Performing for the masses and shattering the masses perception of reality as it is known.

Personal and universal.

So what does the path of Leo and Aquarius meeting to soften the tension and foster harmony look like?

~stability. They are both fixed signs, lets meet at strength and stability rather than stagnation.

~truth. They both are innately true. Exploration of where the mind and heart meet.

~physical activity and meditation are both crucial.

~light the song [insert passion project here] with sense and color to hold away despair.

~a unique container for creativity- colorfully creatively restructuring

~the understanding that the individual is a manifestation of the whole. Integrate self experience into group consciousness.

The actual compromise that comes about depends on the particular planets involved and whether they are transiting or in the natal chart itself. Honestly, I think my deep exploration of the opposition was prompted the transits of Jan 2026 Aquarius season: Venus, Mercury, the Sun and Mars entering Aquarius and making a conjunction with Pluto and thus each an opposition with my personal planets in Leo. Can we say f***ing compromise city around here? I mean can we say INTEGRATION station around here?

The jist of it is- that Leo and Aquarius oppositions meet at the truth of passion and rationality, need to be seen as the individual and the group, and can express creativity in a structured way. Radiance doesn’t die when its contained, it serves more of a purpose.

So, what's my first Pluto lesson? Letting the ego accept a little compromise is actually not the end of the world, but the rebellion that creates a more harmonious one.
