Calamus- An herb that has been traditionally used in Ayurveda for many thousands of years, it was a “renowned herb of the ancient Vedic seers”. Calamus is a  “rejuvenative for the brain and nervous system, which it purifies and revitalizes…It clears the subtle channels of toxins and obstructions. It promotes cerebral circulation, increases sensitivity, sharpens memory and enhances awareness. It is sattvic and one of the best herbs for the mind”. Calamus is an herb that is traditionally used in Ayurveda applied topically in the form of an infused oil. (Quote from Dr. David Frawley & Dr. Vasant Lad, Yoga of Herbs pg 106)

Gotu Kola- I first learned about gotu kola as an herb for meditation, to calm the mind and to increase focus. It is another herb, like calamus that has been traditionally used topically in an infused oil. Its actions, affinities and uses are vast. It is a rejuvenative for the nervous system, is active upon connective tissue and has a direct effect on wound healing. It is used topically and internally for many skin ailments, arthritis, to reduce scar tissue and to help support damaged ligaments and tendons. Gotu kola is said to increase intelligence, longevity and memory.

Lemon Balm- Lemon balm is a joyful herb that acts on the nervous, cardiovascular and digestive systems. Overall it has a cooling and relaxing effect on the tissues of the body. It relaxes the nervous system, but uplifts at the same time. Michael Moore calls is “a simple sedative and a surprisingly effective mood elevator and antidepressant”.

Mullein- Mullein is a tall thin plant, with an air like quality to it, but also houses many minerals like the earth. It has an affinity for the respiratory, nervous and the musculoskeletal systems. You will usually see it in a respiratory tea blend, it functions as an expectorant and a demulcent (moistening), on the the nervous system it has antispasmodic and restorative actions, and on the musculoskeletal system it is lubrication to the synovial fluid and often used to treat injuries or misalignments.

Rosemary- Rosemary is in the air oil because it is a circulatory stimulant, specifically it increases circulation to the brain and the eyes, this is why it is often used as an aid to cognitive function and memory.
